GILBERT & SULLIVAN OPERAS TRAVEL TO GETTYSBURG FESTIVAL FROM GREAT BRITAIN

2010 June Festival Will Showcase 14 Comic Operas

GETTYSBURG, PA (February 1, 2010)—The Gettysburg Festival announces a partnership with the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival annually produced in Buxton, England.  The two festivals are teaming up to produce all 14 comic operas of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan at the 3rd Annual Gettysburg Festival, June 18-27, 2010—marking the first comprehensive showing in North America since 1997.

Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, and The Mikado are just a few of the well-known Gilbert & Sullivan masterpieces that will be presented to Gettysburg Festival audiences this June,” said Alice Estrada, Gettysburg Festival Executive Director. “The lavish costumes and sets will transport audiences back to Victorian-era England, but the underlying themes and humor are simply timeless, and a wonderful enhancement to the Gettysburg Festival.”

“Everyone associated with the productions is thrilled to be coming to Gettysburg this summer,” said Ian Smith, Chairman and Artistic Director of the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, in its 17th year in Britain. “Hundreds of performers, from amateurs to professionals, will descend upon this most beautiful of American towns and its jewel of the theater, The Majestic Theater. We look forward to welcoming loyal G&S ‘nutters’ as well as creating new G&S fans at the Gettysburg Festival.”

As many as a dozen theater companies specializing in Gilbert & Sullivan productions will gather in Gettysburg, hailing from the UK, US and Canada, to present an eclectic mix of professional and amateur theater, including youth productions.

Tickets are on sale and available through the Gettysburg Festival website, ww.gettysburgfestival.org.   Additional Gettysburg Festival highlight events will also be announced in February.
