HMS Pinafore
New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players - New York, NY
Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Gilbert & Sullivan’s first global smash hit, this version of HMS Pinafore is being performed by America’s pre-eminent professional Gilbert & Sullivan repertory company, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP).
Formed in 1974, NYGASP has been faithfully featuring the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, not only in New York’s City Center, but touring the U.S. as well. Previous players include award-winning performers such as John Astin, Hal Linden, Pat Carroll, Steve Allen and, of course, legendary member of the D’Oyly Carte, John Reed, OBE.
British naval sailor, Ralph Rakestraw, is in love with the captain’s daughter – certainly a lofty ideal for a lowly sailor. Unfortunately, the beautiful Josephine is betrothed to the First Lord of the Admiralty of the Queen’s navy who is arriving shortly to collect his bride accompanied by an entourage of sisters, cousins and aunts.
See how a mistaken baby swap saves the day. It’s topsy turvey at its best.
