HMS Pinafore
Victorian Lyric Opera Co. - Rockville, MD
Thursday, June 24, 2010
British social satire takes to the high seas in Gilbert & Sullivan’s first international success performed by the Victorian Lyric Opera Co. Founded in 1978, the company performs musical works of the Victorian period and draws its talent from the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
British naval sailor, Ralph Rakestraw, is in love with the captain’s daughter – certainly a lofty ideal for a lowly sailor. Unfortunately, the beautiful Josephine is betrothed to the First Lord of the Admiralty of the Queen’s navy who is arriving shortly to collect his bride accompanied by an entourage of sisters, cousins and aunts.
See how a mistaken baby swap saves the day. It’s topsy turvey at its best.
Presented by The Gettysburg Festival in collaboration with the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival.
Prior to the performance of HMS Pinafore, meet Festival artist Lisa Egeli from 7–7:30 PM in the Majestic Theater Gallery. Egeli's exhibit "The Poetry of the Earth" features stunning landscapes by this Maryland-based artist.
