The Grand Duke
Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Co. - Ridgewood, NJ
Sunday, June 27, 2010
The last show created and produced by the dynamic duo of Gilbert & Sullivan, The Grand Duke is experiencing a resurgence of interest within the canon. Performed by the Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Co., this group has performed all the works of Gilbert & Sullivan since its founding in 1937. It is one of the oldest continuously performing groups in the US.
In a satire of English law, an actor “kills” his opponents, including the Grand Duke, through a statutory dual involving the drawing of playing cards. As the winner of the dual, the actor assumes all of his opponent’s rights and obligations, including the love and affection of numerous wives!
Leave it up to the lawyers to sort it all out. Sausages roll anyone?
