Gilbert & Sullivan Youth Theater Camp

Opportunity to Train, Perform in Youth Production of Pirates of Penzance

Thursday, June 17, 2010 to Saturday, June 26, 2010

The International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, a new part of the Gettysburg Festival, is seeking 50 to 60 of central Pennsylvania’s most talented youth age 9 to 18 to participate in a production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance.

The show will be performed three times at Gettysburg College’s Kline Theatre during the Festival on June 25 and June 26, 2010 following a week-long theater camp complete with rehearsal schedule on the college campus.

The show will be produced by a team of British directors brought from the United Kingdom to ensure the youth selected will be properly trained in authentic Gilbert & Sullivan humor, dialogue and musical interpretation. All three have successfully worked with youth in the past at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England.

Rehearsals for the production will begin Thursday, June 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seven days prior to the performances. Principal parts will be pre-cast through the submission of a DVD to the Festival prior to rehearsals. Chorus slots will be filled on a first-come basis. Participation in the theater camp/production will cost each cast member $225.00 for the nine days including all rehearsals and performances.

DVDs for principal parts are to be submitted by April 15, 2010 to the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival at 49 East Springettsbury Avenue, York, PA 17403. Principal part selection will be made by May 1, 2010 and principals will receive CDs and score to begin to practice with.

Youth interested in a principal role should include one song and a few lines of dialogue from The Pirates of Penzance. Principal roles include Pirate King, Frederic, Mabel, Ruth, the Major General and the Sergeant of the Police.

A registration form can be downloaded, at right.
