Caribbean Jazz by the Latin Grammy Award-Winning Afro Bop Alliance
Thursday, June 24, 2010
Afro Bop Alliance is a jazz septet from Annapolis, Maryland, which combines the harmonic language of jazz with the rhythmic language of Afro-Cuban rhythms. From Latin jazz to spicy spins on bebop classics, this talented band is earning rave reviews for their outstanding arrangements and musicianship. Their third CD, Afro Bop Alliance: The Caribbean Jazz Project featuring Dave Samuels, won a Latin Grammy in 2008 and a Grammy nomination in 2009 for “Best Latin Jazz Album.” Afro Bop Alliance was also presented the Best Latin Recording Award by the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) for their 2nd CD, Camino Nuevo.
“If you’re craving a dose of superb and energetic Latin jazz, here’s your poison,” raves Keyboard Magazine. The ensemble was created from the desire to explore the vast musical possibilities of all the different cultures which come together under the umbrella of Latin or Latin jazz. They approach this music from a very "western" voice, using the instrumentation of a jazz ensemble augmented with congas, timbales, bongos, bells, etc., playing compositions in Afro-Cuban or Brazilian styles. It is the goal of Afro Bop to fuse all of these wonderful "Latin" styles and cultures with their own jazz experience to create a unique sound.
“The band cooks, no question about it…” (All Music Guide). And speaking of cooking, see related culinary event “Caribbean Cookout,” below, for a fun, pre-concert dining option.
