After taking part in the Spoleto Festival in Italy, renowned organist and choral accompanist Nancianne Parrella was asked to design a new series of concerts for the Spoleto Festival, U.S.A., then just beginning in Charleston, SC. She founded the series she called Intermezzo informal late afternoon concerts held during the week, approximately one hour in length, with a variety of offerings using the organ in combination with other instruments and voices. The Intermezzo concerts were an immediate success and are still part of the festival today. When Director Karl Held wanted to add a similar series to the Gettysburg Festival, using the wonderful organs in the area, he turned to Ms. Parrella to serve as Artistic Director. For Gettysburg, it was decided that the series needed an American name– Interlude was the winner.
