Although a valuable art form in American culture and an incredible resource for children’s arts education and enrichment, the history of Children’s Theatre within the U.S. is relatively brief when compared to other American art forms. Children’s Theatre began to grow as a respectable branch of theatre in the early 1900’s largely in part by two major influences upon the field of what became known as “Theatre For Young Audiences” (TYA) throughout the 20th century.

One was a playwright by the name of Charlotte Chorpenning who began working as the artistic director for the Goodman Theatre in Chicago where she stayed for 21 years all the while writing children’s plays. She adapted many well known fairy tales which became the trend of TYA for some time. TYA was successful on the premise that children would desire to see plays that they recognize the titles of.

The other major influence in Children’s Theatre was Winnifred Ward who in 1918 began her 32 years as a Speech professor at Northwestern University. It was during her work there that she is credited with being the founder of Creative Drama. She was the first to offer courses in the discipline at the university level and taught a generation of teachers. In 1944 she founded the first national child drama organization which is still thriving and is now called the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE).

The Gettysburg Festival proudly presents a variety of Children’s Theatre performances outside at the Gettysburg College campus for the entire family to enjoy. Feel free to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic in the shade on the beautiful campus while enjoying performances suitable for all ages including the ever popular Disney’s High School Musical LIVE ON STAGE!
