American art—rooted in the deeply patriotic time period of 1776—evolved from battlefield scenes to landscapes, morphing into rebellious and purely American abstract art forms. An explosion of pop art, abstract sculpture, experiments with color and mixed media, as well as realism, can all be celebrated as true American art forms.
The Gettysburg Festival ~ Celebrating America explores some of the great icons of the American art world in 2008 including Larry Rivers--“the founding father of pop art;” Paul Davis, who revolutionized the art of the Broadway show poster; Elaine Grove—one of the few great American female sculptors; Bill King, known as America’s original “pop sculptor” and recipient of the 2007 Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award by the International Sculpture Center; and illustrator Hilary Knight, best known for depicting the blithe spirit of childhood through the celebrated children’s book character Eloise in classic 1950’s style.
Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Color, Metal, Realism, Abstraction: Come explore the works of more than a dozen true American artists whose many media are linked by one common thread--the creative American spirit.
